How do I tell the difference between all the "duct cleaners" I see advertised?

With the advent of colder weather and the need to start running our furnaces, the need for duct cleaning has moved to the forefront of many people's thoughts. The problem is that many people have a hard time deciding which company to choose for this much needed service.

Is there really a difference in the services and the companies that offer the service?

You bet there is!

Duct cleaning is an important and necessary component of the overall maintenance of your home comfort system. A clean and well-maintained duct system will save you time, money and frustration. Duct systems are complex arrangements of pipe, plenums and lots of different parts that work together to deliver tempered air to the areas where you need it. No two duct systems are exactly alike! Therefore, it is imperative that your choice of duct-cleaning companies believes that your duct system is important enough to assess before pricing. Be very wary of companies that will quote you a price on the phone or without first seeing you duct system. These companies are selling a pig-in-a poke and that is something you can do without buying. AAA Indoor Air Quality will never price a job without assessing it ...and the assessment is completely free of charge.

Is there a difference in the methods for cleaning ductwork?

You bet there is!

The science of duct cleaning has come a long way in the past 49 years (the length of time AAA has been in the business) and is not a matter of just sticking a shop vac into the ducts and turning it on. Building and duct pressurization are important parts of the job and should be addressed by the method employed by your duct-cleaner. Lots of companies today use self-contained portable systems that include a "rotating brush" to clean. While these will do a fair job, it is very important that the entire system of ductwork be under "negative pressure". The only way to achieve this negative pressure is with a vacuum collection device that moves in excess of 10,000 cfm of air movement. The portable units that are rolled into your house for cleaning will not develop this amount of suction and the only negative pressure developed is right at the cleaning ball. This is not the way to properly clean ductwork! AAA Indoor Air Quality employs the NADCA source removal method of cleaning, which utilizes a very powerful truck mounted collection device. We also maintain negative pressure on the entire system the whole time that cleaning is under way. This includes the furnace and any other piece of equipment that is in the airstream. Our trucks are outside of the home or office and cannot re-contaminate the area being cleaned. Make sure that you know which method your duct-cleaner uses.

Is there a difference in the level of education for duct-cleaners?

You bet there is!

Most duct-cleaners today hire for bodies rather than skill. AAA Indoor Air Quality is a Regular NADCA (National Air Duct Cleaners Association) Member. This means that we have adopted the rigorous standards set forth in NADCA Standard ACR 2002, the only internationally recognized standard for duct cleaning methods and techniques (go to www.NADCA.com to investigate). Founded in 1986, NADCA is the only duct-cleaning organization in America that teaches and certifies Air Systems Cleaning Specialist and Commercial Ventilation Inspector. Both of these certifications require intensive training and testing to achieve. In fact, of all the people that test for these certifications, only 60 % ever achieve them. AAA Indoor Air quality has three (3) ASCS's and one (1) CVI on staff. Our regular cleaning technicians have all passed a thorough in house education and testing regime on the standards and practices of NADCA ACR 2002. This means that you are getting your duct-cleaning done by professionals who know how it should be done. Simply claiming that you clean to the NADCA Standard doesn't make it so. If your duct cleaning company is not a NADCA MEMBER, they do not have the ability to clean to our standard. Doesn't it then make sense to choose a NADCA member company to clean your system?

Given the importance of duct cleaning for your home and the importance of choosing the right duct-cleaning company, doesn't it make sense to choose only the best?

You bet it does!
